FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 11, 2019 Contact: apposhtechsavvy@gmail.com Appleton and Oshkosh Branches to Host 6th Annual STEM Program for Girls on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at UW OSHKOSH FOX CITIES UWO Fox Cities, Menasha - The Appleton and Oshkosh Branches will again host AAUW Tech Savvy, a daylong conference with all women mentors, designed to show girls first hand how STEM fields can lead to exciting careers. The conference will welcome girls in grades six through nine and their parents to UW Oshkosh Fox Cities. More information about Tech Savvy and the programming being offered this year can be found on either of the following websites. Registration opens February 11, 2020. There is limited space in the workshops so early registration is encouraged to get the sessions you want. Links: https://appleton-wi.aauw.net/tech-savvy/ or https://oshkosh-wi.aauw.net/tech-savvy/. Girls from last year found the Tech Savvy conference interactive and FUN! A sample of this year’s experiences are Microorganisms in My Food, Genes in a Bottle, Zombie Hunting, and Stellar Classification and Exoplanets. Parents also attend workshops to learn how to encourage their daughters. One parent commented,” I found the overall experience beneficial and I feel empowered to help my child.” Another parent said they were inspired to help their daughter to shoot higher, learn what “Engineering” can mean, and the financial cost of college. Included in the conference are college recruiters and girl-empowering workshops. One girl’s reflection on the College Savvy workshop, “I really enjoyed meeting college recruiters and getting the information I needed to know to apply for college and about what careers are good for me”. Although women hold close to half of all jobs in the U.S. economy, they hold less than 25 percent of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) jobs. AAUW’s Tech Savvy and similar programs offer one way to increase the number of women in the STEM pipeline. Created in 2006 by Tamara Brown, former president of the AAUW Buffalo (NY) Branch, Tech Savvy has since served more than 5,000 girls. As a result of her work, Brown was honored as a White House Champion of Change. ### The American Association of University Women (AAUW) empowers women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy, and research. Our nonpartisan, nonprofit organization has more than 170,000 members and supporters across the United States, as well as 1,000 local branches and more than 800 college and university partners. Since AAUW’s founding in 1881, our members have examined and taken positions on the fundamental issues of the day — educational, social, economic, and political.
