Nursing Coordinator - Infection Preventionist

Reporting to the Nursing Director, the Nursing Coordinator leads, plans, supervises, and directs nursing care and nursing care team members. The Nursing Coordinator administers the MDS process and other quality assurance processes including infection control, wound care and restorative nursing processes within Brewster Village. The Nursing Coordinator performs related duties including providing nursing care, preparing reports, developing policies and procedures, scheduling team members, coordinating studies, training other team members in nursing processes and procedures as well as quality improvement. 

 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are most critical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.      
 
  • Provides direct leadership and supervision to Nurse Specialists, Neighborhood Coordinators, Medication Assistants, and Wellness Nurses.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and evaluates nursing care for all shifts.
  • Serves as Infection Preventionist, develops policies, procedures, training, compliance audits, and quality improvement projects which support these initiatives.
  • Provides person-directed care; administers medications, completes treatments and villager assessments, responds to emergencies, and assists medical team members in procedural treatments.
  • Participates in oversight of restorative nursing by providing guidance and coordination to the referral process for therapy services.  
  • Provides collaboration with peers to offer guidance and education related to; MDS coordination and quality assurance and improvement.
  • Defines, interprets, and evaluates nursing practices, including quality improvement opportunities; maintains policy and procedure manuals and standards of care for all nurses.
  • Serves as shift nursing team leader responding to emergencies; coordinates communication between departments, with outside agencies, etc.
  • Functions as Medicare Coordinator as assigned which consists of monitoring and communicating villager health status to therapy and neighborhood coordinators.
  • Establishes and attends committee and team meetings; participates as team member as assigned.
  • Provides assistance with interviewing and orienting new team members.
  • Assists in schedule preparation; monitors staffing assignments to ensure that villager needs and regulations are met, and offers staffing recommendations to Nursing Services Director as needed.
  • Coordinates vaccination programs for villagers, team members and volunteers.
  • Provides guidance for nursing skills and competencies through annual medication administration audits and facilitating ongoing educational opportunities.
  • Collaborates and communicates with other members of Brewster Village leadership to meet established goals and objectives.
  • Promotes empowerment of the team in providing person directed care, participates in team problem solving, monitors team members performance and provides feedback through coaching and counseling to keep the overall function of the household running smoothly.
  • Provides leadership and vision to the household by serving as a role model, collaborates with others.
  • Maintains a safe, comfortable and functional environment by assessing the household for potential hazards, implements practices utilizing appropriate techniques regarding sanitation, infection control, fire safety, disaster preparedness and emergency care, investigates and reports all incidents and accidents, and observes the team for safe work habits.
  • Maintains regular and predictable attendance, works overtime/extra hours as required.
  • Develops policies, procedures, compliance audits, and Quality Improvement initiatives which support sound wound care practices and prevention.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing, with three to five years nursing experience, including supervisory experience.
  • Must possess valid unrestricted RN licensure from the Wisconsin DSPS.  This is also expected throughout employment as a condition of continued employment.
  • Or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Wound Care Certification, Infection Preventionist Training, and knowledge in MDS Assessment and coordination is preferred.
  • Must maintain current certification in adult CPR.
REQUIRED OR PREFERRED SKILLS:
  • Ability to use nursing equipment including IV equipment, diagnostic equipment, etc.
  • Ability to assign, supervise, and review the work of others by offering expertise and guidance as needed and requested.
  • Ability to make recommendations regarding the selection, discipline, and discharge of employees.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide, calculate decimals and percents, and make use of the principles of descriptive statistics.
  • Ability to prepare, comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including health records, laboratory, incident, billing and other quality improvement reports, schedules, performance evaluations policy and procedure manuals, etc.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, to include a combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. May involve manipulating of 21-50 pound items for intermittent periods of time.
  • Ability to use and interpret medical and personnel related terminology.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and effectively with Brewster Village administrators and care givers, government health agency representatives, special interest groups, sales representatives, and others verbally and in writing, and understand the importance of modeling positive attitudes and behaviors.
  • Ability to assure that federal, state and local laws as well as accepted professional standards and principles of professional organization, boards and councils are followed.
  • Ability to see person-directed living as an important component in providing villagers with a sense of health and well-being.
